Artist Statement

A smiling man with a mustache wearing a red cap and a brown shirt, standing outdoors with trees in the background. The image has various doodles and symbols, including a smiley face, a red cross with a black face, a yellow heart, a red face with a black face, a star, and the word "EXCELLENT" written on it.

My work often draws from the visual language and material conditions of the Texas landscape- the tension between the familiar and the overlooked. I am increasingly interested in how places accumulate layers of history and folklore, and how those layers can be translated through material processes that are physical, psychological, and symbolic. Through painting, drawing, and mixed-media plunges into installation, I explore the relationship between lived experience and the environments that shape it- especially as it occurs though the lenses of mental illness and cultural history. This endeavor allows fragments of the historical, the contemporary, the pop, and the kitsch all working to inform the development of a total artwork.
